One Day in Brooklyn

about

I wrote “One Day in Brooklyn” in the days following the 2016 election. I was struggling with the fear of Trump, the prevalence of such severe divisions in our country, the power of social media, and the creation of “fake news.”
The idea for the title comes from Hillary Clinton’s campaign based in Brooklyn Heights, but the song is about struggling to keep fighting when everything seems hopeless. It is about experiencing loss and pain, but continuing to march on in hopes of better days to come.

One of my best friends and frequent collaborators Matthew Gregory and I recorded this song at his home studio when he was living just off Prospect Park. I actually wasn’t living in Brooklyn at any point of the writing or recording process of the song and just moved to Bed Stuy in January. We wanted to keep the arrangement relatively simple to emphasize the feelings of loss, but there was something very sweet about the guitar track that lent itself to an almost saccharine piano accompaniment. The vocal was the most difficult to get right as it couldn’t be too soft and sweet because it turned the song sappy and disingenuous. Adding a little bit of grit brought out an extra layer of depth to the performance.

I hope you enjoy!

lyrics

One day in Brooklyn I grew up with your words
Knocking round my head like an echo
They started soft like the sound of distant drums
Building on the battlements of my mind

And oh how they pounded
Breaking my walls

And oh how they found it
Deep in the falls

Marching still onwards I hear a different call
The teachers only gave what they knew
Filling up the heads of kids with minds like fire
The facts and figures fade to what is true

And oh how they sounded
Answering the cheer
And oh they expounded
For far be it from what is near

And I want to tell you
I know this moment will pass
And I know this creature is the last

But it’s just one more day in Brooklyn

Jacob Shipley New York, New York

Jacob Shipley writes, sings, and tells stories about the moments in life we’d rather not repeat. Some of his music is sorrowful, some sardonic and humorous, but all of it comes from a deeply personal place that is easy to connect with because we’ve all been there. Listening to Jacob is like reminiscing with an old friend: not everything was easy, but at least we made it through. ... more
